Clinical Experience of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for Childhood Urolithiasis




Abstract
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) monotherapy were performed in 12 children with urinary stones using the Modulith SL 20 electromagnetic lithotripter between December, 1990 and July, 1992.
@ES The results obtained were as follows:
@EN 1. The sex was 7(58.3%) in male and 5(41.7%) in female. The average patient age was 7.9 years with a range of 1 to 15 years.
2. The locations of stone were kidney in 5(41.7%) and ureter in 7(58.3%). The size of stone was a range of 0.4 to 2.3cm in 11 and staghorn calculi in 1.
3. Five of 12 patients (41.7%) were required general anesthesia and 7 of 12 patients were controled by only analgesics.
4. The average numbers of ESWL were 2.1 sessions with a range of 1 to 7 times.
5. The total average success rate was 100%, ten of the 12 patients(83.3%) for whom a month follow up were free of stone.
6. All of the patients was not required the pre & post-ESWL additional manipulation. Main complications of ESWL were gross hematuria(100%), pain(25%), fever(16.7%), steinstrasse(16.7%), but ESWL complications were disappeared with conservative
treatment.
Therefore, ESWL monotherapy with Modulith SL 20 is considered to be a safe, effective, and easily applicable procedure for the treatment of childhood urolithiasis as well as adult urinary stone.
